The primary cause of hair loss in men is androgenetic alopecia—or "male pattern" baldness. This occurs in men whose hair follicles are sensitive to the hormone dihydrotestosterone, or DHT. Typically, hair on the top and front of the head is sensitive to this hormone and over time this hair will become weaker and finer and eventually will strop growing. However, lifelong hair follicles are found on the back of the head in all men, these hairs are genetically resistant to DHT and will generally last into your 70's. It is not that these hairs are not exposed to DHT, it is just that they are resistant to DHT and therefore can survive for your entire lifetime.

Androgenetic alopecia is responsible for over 95% of hair loss in men. This is a process that is progressive in nature and affects most men over the age of 50. For some unfortunate men, this process may start before the age of 21.

DHT in genetically – susceptible men is the culprit for this type of hair loss mechanism. DHT interacts with receptors on the hair follicles and starts hair miniaturization and ultimate loss.

NORWOOD SCALE

The clinical scale for measurement and degree of hair loss is known as the Norwood or Hamilton Scale. It will assist in your diagnosis and treatment of hair loss. Our physician will explain the use of the scale when you have your initial assessment.
